There were some extremely compelling nominees for the Sonoma County Poet Laureate this year. And while I whole-heartedly agree with the selection committee's final decision to appoint Phyllis Meshulam, another candidate with whose work I was familiar is Elizabeth Carothers Herron. I think I first met Elizabeth twenty years ago at a David Bromige reading. Her poetry is lyrical and profound, and she has long been an advocate for peace and for a sustainable relationship between human beings and the rest of the natural world.
This is a beautifully crafted little limited edition chapbook, printed for "Peace or War," an event at a West County art gallery in 2006, and I couldn't find an image of its cover online, so I took a picture for myself:
I needed a slender volume after the full-length collections from the last few days. But this little book packed a huge punch. This is a link to her one of the poems in the chapbook from her website.
