The Sealey Challenge, Day Twelve: Unaccompanied by Javier Zamora

I was surprised to find Marin County references (Mt. Tamalpais, the Marin Airporter, Greenbrae, Larkspur) in this book. Which just shows that even though I definitely know better, at some level, I must think of the trauma of having to come to the states illegally as something that happens in the abstract. Javier's poems are difficult, but so important as a witness to the violence that can drive people to flee home and family, and risk their lives to escape to America under extremely dangerous circumstances. Zamora's poems are powerful and avoid the easy trap of being sentimental or exploitive.
